2. Bauxite Refining Process
After crushing and grinding, the bauxite undergoes refining to separate aluminum oxide (alumina) from the remaining impurities. The most common refining process is the Bayer Process, which involves dissolving the bauxite in a hot solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This process separates the alumina from the impurities, which are removed as a residue called “red mud.” The alumina is then further processed through electrolysis to produce aluminum metal.
